Saint Francis of Assisi is the saint patron of the wolf cub (Association des scouts catholique du Canada)

Lieutenant General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, OM GCMG GCVO KCB KStJ DL (22 February 1857 – 8 January 1941), was a British Army officer, writer, founder and first Chief Scout of the worldwide Scout Movement, and founder, with his sister Agnes, of the world-wide Girl Guide / Girl Scout Movement. Baden-Powell authored the first editions of the seminal work Scouting for Boys, which inspired the Scout Movement.

The Boy Scouts develop character, moral values, and leadership qualities in young boys as they become adults. This is all while having fun outdoor activities like camping, backpacking, canoeing and exploring. Boy Scouts learn essential skills that stay with them their entire lives, such as first aid, cooking, emergency planning, basic financial skills, citizenship, compass and map reading, and many others.

Cub Scouts, Cubs, or Wolf Cubs are programs associated with Scouting for young children, usually between 9 and 12 (Quebec 1960), depending on the organization to which they belong. A participant in the program is called a Cub, and a group of Cubs is called a 'Pack.'

The Wolf Cub program originated with the Boy Scouts Association in the United Kingdom in 1916. It was created to provide a program for boys too young to be Boy Scouts. Many other Scouting organizations adopted it. Many Scouting organizations, including The Scout Association, no longer use the Wolf Cub program and have replaced it with other programs but have retained the name Cubs. Others, including Traditional Scouting organizations, maintain the original Wolf Cubs program.

Originally, Cubs programs were open only to boys, while young girls could join the Brownies. Some Cub organizations are open to girls and boys in different units. A few organizations also operate a Sea Cub version of Cubs.

In 1916, the Cub Scout program was introduced as part of Scouts Canada with a programme similar to that of the UK. Cub Scouting is open to youth of both sexes, ages 8 to 10 inclusive. Sixes wear a coloured triangular patch rather than a distinctive woggle. (If brown, for example, the six is known as Brown Six.) The Cub motto is "Do Your Best," and the promise, the vow recited in opening ceremonies, is:

"I promise to do my best,

to do my duty to God and the Queen,

to keep the law of the Wolfcub pack,

and do a good turn every day."

Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of Cubs because of his relationship with wolves.

Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone; Italian: Francesco d'Assisi; Latin: Franciscus Assisiensis; 1181 or 1182 – 3 October 1226), was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon, and mystic. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most revered religious figures in Christianity.

Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis on 16 July 1228. Along with Catherine of Siena, he was designated patron saint of Italy. He later became associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment, and it became customary for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of 4 October. In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert Sultan al-Kamil and put an end to the conflict of the Fifth Crusade. Once the Pope authorized his community, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs. Francis is known for his love of the Eucharist. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas live nativity scene.
